Welcome to CONNECT SERIES: 2021, where we talk to our brilliant and budding MRF founders! Here we explore the ups and downs and the wins and fails of pursuing your dream of starting a label... And most importantly the wisdom, tips and tricks you learn along the way!
This week we speak to Ben Campain about his founders journey at Tapsquire!
What skills have helped you develop TapSquire?
Resilience has been one of the most important skills to get to this point. Each day brings so many new challenges running your own startup so I've learnt to not get too caught up in the bumps along the road and keep pushing forward.
What lies in the heart of your brand and designs?
We have focused on creating a brand that combines innovation and style. Products that not only look and feel great but function more conveniently. TAPSQUIRE users can be sure that their day will be made that little bit easier and that they can live it in style.
Do you have advice for other designers dreaming of having a fashion label?
Work out what you'd love and then share that with the world. It's always easier to develop something that you would genuinely love as a consumer.
What is one key piece of advice you have learned on your journey?
To enjoy the wins along the way. Stop, take a breath and be proud of your achievements. It's easy to get caught up in chasing the next goal while forgetting that you've just hit the one you'd dreamed of months ago.
What is the best part of your role?
I've always loved the idea of developing something that never existed before. Whether it's a unique product or brand that can have some kind of impact on others daily life. I just think it's great to bring something new into the world that wasn't there before.
What skills have served you well in your brand journey?
Creativity. I worked for a long time in the music industry and at the time undervalued my creativity. I remember when I was working behind the scenes at Uber as they launched in Australia. I was talking to my boss at the time about creativity. He said, "your creativity in business could be your most valuable asset because it can't be recreated by a computer." I really embraced that and it inspired me to develop TAPSQUIRE.
What do you want people to know about your brand or your role?
That we really care. We care about making our users' day easier. We care about the TAPSQUIRE community and we care about creating a quality product that we can be proud of and they can too.
What challenges have you faced getting to where you are now? Is there one that stands out the most?
We launched our Kickstarter in 2019 and believed we could fulfil our orders quicker than we did. This was due to challenges with the product design, not being able to travel due to COVID and many more bumps we learnt about along the way. Our whole community was waiting eagerly to get their hands on a TAPSQUIRE and we had to extend shipping time on several occasions. It was hard feeling like we could not deliver in the timeline we had said. However, we didn't want to jeopardize the quality of the product and rush it out. The more I communicated with our community about the ups and downs, the more they understood the real challenges. Finally, we shipped the product to them just a few months back and it was a pretty awesome relief to be able to deliver something we are really proud of.
What's a non-negotiable in your schedule?
My puppy dog Pawsha comes to work with me. We walk to and from our co-working space each day and then go to the dog park after work. In some meeting situations it can be a little difficult with her coming a long but 90% of the time she is there by my side.
What product are you most excited to launch at MRF?
Our flagship TAPSQUIRE product is a premium World first contactless card wallet where at the press of a button a user can individually tap their cards straight from their wallet without ever having to touch or remove them. Combining innovation with exceptional style, the slim RFID protected metal casing is veiled in leather and results in a quality product that is perfect for the now and embraces "stylish accessibility".
